Immigration Health Surcharge Increase confirmed to start on 6th of February 2024

Following on from our previous articles about the proposed IHS increase and the subsequent delay, Parliament has now approved the increase, and it is scheduled for the 6th of February 2024. This is now laid on the Immigration (Health Charge) (Amendment) Order 2024 following parliament approval on 16 January.

The order states:

Citation, commencement, extent and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Immigration (Health Charge) (Amendment) Order 2024.

  (2) This Order comes into force on the later of 16th January 2024 or the twenty-first day after the day on which it is made.

What are the current fees?

The current annual IHS fee for adults is £624; for students and their dependents, youth mobility scheme applicants and children, the annual IHS fee is £470.

Example of Visa IHS fees

Spouse Visa ( from UK)£1560
Spouse Visa ( from the Abroad)£1,872
Student Visa for 3 years Degree£1,410
Student Visa for 1 Year Master Degree£470

What will the new fees be?

The fees are increasing by 66%, so from the 6th of February 2024, the IHS for adults will be £1,035, and for students and their dependents, youth mobility scheme applicants and children, it will be £776.

The fees are an annual charge, so a visa application will be affected as follows.

Visa TypeOld IHS FeesNew IHS Fees
Spouse Visa ( from UK)£1560£2,587.50
Spouse Visa ( from the Abroad)£1,872£2,846.25
Student Visa for 1 Year Master’s Degree£1,410£2,328
Student Visa for 1 Year Master Degree£470£776

There are a few more days left… apply now.

This further delay allows a few extra days for those currently trying to apply before the increase. It is a large increase, so it would be a substantial savings if an application can be made now.

It is a shame that this has been passed into law, as many people hoped there would be enough objections to delay its implementation.
